FAITH. HOPE. LOVE.

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.
But the greatest of these is love.

Pastor Ponderings

One of my favorite scenes from the TV show M*A*S*H comes from the episode entitled “The Incubator.” Hawkeye, Trapper John, and the 4077 crew were desperate to acquire a gizmo that grows germs that made it much easier to diagnose infections.

They located an army supply depot that had three of them, two still in their original crates. The major in charge of the depot absolutely refused to let them have one.

Hawkey argued, “But you got three.”

The major replied, “That’s right, and if I give one away, I’ll only have two.”

Trapper jumped in, “What’s wrong with two?”

The major was incredulous. “Two is not as good as three.”

“But you’re not even using them.”

Saying “Who says I have to?” He shut down the conversation.

To me this is a classic example of the MINDSET of SCARCITY.

We hold on tight because less seems bad.

We can’t do something or use something or spend something in which we have been abundantly gifted to overflowing because then we won’t have as much.

God has gifted us with so much as individuals, as a people and as churches, but sometimes we are like that major and our mindset is one of scarcity. If I use this much, then I’ll only have that much, even though we will still have it in excess.

This is not Jesus’ way.

In Luke 12:48, our Jesus said, “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.”

We are not called to a mindset of scarcity, but to live by sharing our God given abundant gifts.

The Grace and Peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
